Learn Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) in Calgary & Airdrie, Alberta Canada! Bighorn Historical Combat is dedicated to developing a diverse community passionate about historical swordfighting. Our accomplished coaches bring a wealth of martial arts expertise and competitive background to the table. We offer engaging training sessions suitable for people of all proficiency and fitness levels within a welcoming and encouraging environment. By incorporating modern training methodologies, we aim to enhance skill sets and develop a strong community spirit among our participants.
Swords & learning
We provide training for a wide variety of swords. Our specialty focuses on the two handed Longsword and the Sabre, but are also highly experienced with the smallsword, flail, messer, sidesword, and sword & buckler. We use a mix of steel, nylon synthetics, and foam to provide a low barrier of entry no matter your budget.
Protective Equipment
Your safety is important to us - we have the highest safety standard with approved gear lists and safety protocols while maintaining options for all budgets. To help you get geared up, we have partnerships with multiple gear retailers to get equipment as cheap as possible. Finally, our experience and recommendations means we will work with you to get exactly what you’re looking for.
Beginner Day
We are offering beginner days! The first Sunday of every month we train 10 new students in the basics of the two handed longsword, and the smallsword. Register today for next month’s beginner day to learn how to swordfight in a very beginner friendly environment!
Community
The swordfighting community is well known for its warmth and inclusivity, welcoming people from all walks of life with open arms (pun intended). It doesn't matter if your hobbies are weightlifting, tabletop RPGs, sports, socializing at the local pub, going to concerts, playing videogames, or painting miniatures. You are sure to find like-minded people to swing swords with and make new friends along the way.

There are competitions all over the globe and we go to many of them and host them ourselves. Events are a fantastic excuse to travel, meet new people, and to test yourself via the thrill of competition; we can’t recommend them enough! Our coaches are some of the most seasoned tournament veterans in the country and can help prepare you for your first, or your twentieth!
